Calling all Stanford Biodesign students, post-docs and visiting student researchers creating medical technology innovations! LUNAR is now accepting entries for the 6th annual Robert Howard Next Step Awards. This is great opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge and share it with the design community.
LUNAR will provide hands-on design and engineering consultation to the winners. This usually consists of 2 design process and/or regulatory advising sessions with LUNAR’s Life Sciences team, along with 1 to 2 focused 1-week design sprints. In the past, the team has provided expertise in branding, design for manufacturing, sketching and investor pitching.
The 2016 winners were Lunair, a mini air pollution filtering system that communicates air quality via app, and Palmm, a wearable device that treats hyperhidrosis or uncontrollable sweating of the hands.
The awards honor Robert Howard who served as VP of Engineering with LUNAR for 15 years. He was a Stanford Alumnus (MSME ’86) and served as a lecturer in the Department of Product Design. Robert loved helping people, teaching, tinkering, making the impossible possible, designing healthcare products, and being involved in the Stanford community – in particular the Biodesign program.
LUNAR recently hosted its first livestream teardown with Fictiv, manufacturer of 3D printed and CNC machined parts. We decided to shake things up a bit and open up our process to the community in conjunction with this teardown veteran. Together, we agreed that one compelling product to dissect would be our Alpine Headphones, a 2016 iF Product Design Award winner.
Alpine wanted to extend their brand to a younger audience and came to us with an idea for headphones specifically targeting EDM market, a natural extension of their core products—premium car audio with awesome bass. These headphones would allow them to establish an iconic presence and provide a similar experience in a portable form. They came to LUNAR with a proof of concept, and left with sensational headphones that truly enhance the senses so customers can better hear and actually feel their music.

In this one hour event, we set out to focus on two main components of the Alpine Headphones:
Challenges + solutions around designing the headband/transducer structure –
We needed to capture and transmit vibration, achieve a minimum and repeatable clamping force without making the headphone uncomfortable.
Product design insights around the ear cup adjustment & pivot mechanism –
Most headphones on the market have a simple folding hinge for storage. While this is generally perceived as the compact way to store headphones, we took another route with the industrial design—a more seamless look that doesn’t show the hinge. Our pivot mechanism allows for a slim profile that lays flat in order to slip easily into a bag for transport. The adjustment mechanism is hidden from view, providing a clever way to manage the internal wiring while allowing for the full range of head sizes.
Dave Evans, CEO of Fictiv, led the discovery process during the teardown. From LUNAR, Senior Industrial Designer Terence Kwan and Director of Engineering Andrew Zee joined to shed light on the design and engineering decisions for each component of the headphones.

LUNAR is proud to announce a 2017 iF product design award win for Jaunt ONE, the fully-immersive, 360-degree cinematic virtual reality (VR) experience camera.
LUNAR partnered with Jaunt to create a design that elevates the product through its clear expression as a high-end filmmaking tool, rather than just a mass-market consumer device. Built with VR pros in mind, Jaunt is one of the first cinematic cameras with a design that expresses robust strength and reliability, while minimizing its presence on a set.
Jaunt contains 24 high-performance, heat-dissipating pure optic lenses. Its detailed, physical expression is achieved through the incorporation of curving, rhythmic lines, and the seamless integration of the fins and handle.
Each year, Germany’s oldest independent design organization, Hannover-based iF International Forum Design GmbH, organizes the iF Design Award. The award is a leader in quality for exceptional design. This year, more than 5,500 entries were submitted from 59 countries in hopes of receiving the seal of quality.

LUNAR and Autodesk share a passion for work done by the design and engineering professions. This fall, LUNAR co-founders Jeff Smith and Gerard Furbershaw, and Autodesk CEO Carl Bass, industrial designer Arthur Harsuvanakit, and mechanical engineer Lucas Prokopiak, joined forces to collaborate on the creation of a design concept.
