Lunar Design is a creative force in the world of design and product development. Our passion is creating beautiful products that make a difference to the people who use them and the companies that make them. Our diverse staff represents nationalities from around the globe to give us a broad perspective and enable us to design for an international audience. We draw from many viewpoints, sources of inspiration and histories to infuse our projects with emotion and meaning as well as functionality and brand presence.

We are seeking qualified candidates for the following positions:

Interaction Designer-Independent Contractor
San Francisco office

Interaction Designers at Lunar define how products behave and how people will use them. Working closely with industrial designers, engineers, and visual designers, you will design product behaviors from concept down to the last pixel. Our interaction designers participate in user research, discern user needs, and develop and communicate interaction models. At Lunar, you have the opportunity to use your skills on a variety of products, from software applications to consumer electronics to medical equipment.

About You:
You are looking to work as an independent contractor in a growing interaction design practice at a leading design firm. You have a passion for understanding how people think and making things work. You have 2-5 years of experience designing physical interactive products, software tools and/or web applications. You are familiar with design research methods, and you are hungry to learn more. You’re a great communicator who knows how to break down a problem and develop solutions. You’re serious about design, yet don’t take yourself too seriously. You also have more than just a resume to show us: you’ve put together a portfolio that exemplifies the essence of your passion for design.

To Apply:
Please submit a resume and samples of your work that best demonstrate your skills and experience. Please submit your portfolio electronically, either by sending an enclosure (single PDF preferred) or by sending a URL where it can be viewed. Please do not send CDs or hard copies. Resumes and portfolios may be sent to HR [at] lunar [dot] com; please put “Interaction Design Contractor” in the subject line.

Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager
San Francisco office

About You:
You have been successfully designing products for a few years and have started to manage the process, the team, and the clients.  You have experience in a variety of design areas that bring immediate contributions to the table, and you have confidence in your ability to learn quickly in areas that are new.  You have a desire to lead projects to exceed client’s expectations; you hunger to implement bleeding edge materials and processes on tight schedules and budgets; and you aspire to manage and mentor team members along the way.

Clients come to Lunar to get the whole solution.  Our engineers are the keystone of this capability, working hand-in-hand with our industrial designers, clients, and suppliers to achieve unparalleled results.  As one of the leaders of this team, you will be responsible for developing innovative product concepts and turning them into the world’s best products.

Engineering at Lunar demands exceptional mechanical conceptualization, analysis, and visualization skills.  Also essential are flawless communication skills (spoken, written, and sketched), creativity, sound judgment, organization, diplomacy, thoroughness, professionalism, humor, and an uncanny desire to do great work.

Requirements include a minimum of a BSME with 4 years experience in related engineering roles, ideally including working closely with industrial designers at a product development consulting firm.  Experience with Pro/Engineer or SolidWorks is highly desirable, with sensitivity to complex surfacing preferred.  Working knowledge of high- and low-volume manufacturing methods is required.  Experience guiding the work of others and directly supporting clients is also desired.

You will be immediately effective, learning quickly, while also teaching us a thing or two.  Responsibilities will include product development as well as direct client management, budget planning and management, program leadership, and team mentoring.

To Apply:
Please submit a resume and samples of your work that best demonstrate your skills and experience.  Please submit your portfolio electronically either by sending an enclosure (single PDF or PPT preferred) or by sending a URL where it can be viewed.  Please do not send CDs or hard copies.  Resumes and portfolios may be sent to HR [at] lunar [dot] com; please put “Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager” in the subject line.  No phone calls, please.

Mechanical Engineer
San Francisco and Palo Alto offices

About You:
You’re interested in more than what you learned in engineering school: beyond your excellent grasp of how things interact in 3D, you want to create real products that look, feel and work great while continuing to delight their users long after they’ve recycled the box. You already have a few years under your belt engineering real things (maybe in school, maybe not) but that’s just whetted your appetite for more, and it’s time to join a team that can give your passions a chance to shine.

Clients come to Lunar to get the whole solution. Our engineers are the keystone of this capability, working hand-in-hand with our industrial designers, clients and suppliers to achieve unparalleled results. As a member of this team, you will be responsible for developing innovative product concepts and turning them into the world’s best products.

Engineering at Lunar demands exceptional mechanical conceptualization, analysis and visualization skills. Also essential are flawless communication skills (spoken, written and sketched), creativity, sound judgment, organization, diplomacy, thoroughness, professionalism, humor and an uncanny desire to do great work.

Requirements include a BSME or BSPD, either recently graduated or with up to three years engineering work experience, or equivalent. Ideal work experience would be with a product development consulting firm working with industrial designers. Experience with Pro/Engineer or SolidWorks is highly desirable and relevant surfacing experience is a plus. Working knowledge of high and low-volume manufacturing methods is also relevant for the position.

Candidates hired for this position will be expected to start fast and learn quickly in an amazingly supportive environment. Responsibilities will include developing product concepts, exploration of configuration layouts, and detail design from initial conception to final production, all in a nurturing team environment.

To Apply:
Please submit a resume and portfolio of your work that best demonstrate your skills and experience. We'd like to see the final results of your projects AND the process/methods that led you there, including rough sketches, thumbnailing, on-paper ideation; anything and everything that helps us understand how you think through a problem. If you are a recent graduate, we’ll want to see your transcripts.

Please submit your portfolio electronically either by sending an enclosure (single PDF or PPT preferred) or by sending a URL where it can be viewed. Please do not send CDs or hard copies. Resumes and portfolios may be sent to HR [at] lunar [dot] com; please put “Mechanical Engineer” in the subject line. No phone calls, please.

Mechanical Engineer Intern - Year-Round availability
San Francisco office

About You:
You must be highly self-motivated with achievements that demonstrate this. You should have a gleam in your eye, a hunger to learn and help, and an ability to communicate effectively. You must be currently enrolled or accepted in a mechanical engineering (or similar) degree program. Ideally, you have taken basic physics, engineering statics, and dynamics. 3D CAD modeling experience is also a plus, preferably in Pro/Engineer or SolidWorks – not a requirement, but this would make you very effective right from the start.

As our engineering intern, you work closely with our mechanical engineering, industrial design, and interaction design teams. Interns may interact directly with clients, contribute to concept, layout and part development, create prototypes, perform stress analysis, develop in-house procedures and tools, or study new technologies for future use.

Internships usually last about 3 months, based on your availability, and can be full or part-time depending on your schedule. We require a commitment of at least 20 hours per week while working in our San Francisco studio. You will be responsible for all of your living arrangements.

To Apply:
If you would like to be considered for this position, please submit HARD copies in ONE package of the following:

[1] Resume - Let us know what relevant work you've done.

[2] Cover Letter - Let us know you can communicate well in the written language. Why are you our ideal choice for a future intern?

[3] Unofficial transcripts (both undergraduate and graduate) - We don't expect straight A's, but you should have done well in basic engineering courses.

[4] Examples of your work that help us to understand your experience and capabilities. It can be images of any project in which you were involved - school or personal. We don't want to see full reports, but we do need to see that you know how to work through solving a problem and can present the process and solution clearly.

This includes defining the problem (why is this product important? what makes it different?), brainstorming, generating concepts (please include sketches; they don't need to be pretty, they just need to be clear), making mock-ups and models, and presenting the final design. To safeguard your work, please do not send original materials.

Why hard copies? It makes our process more efficient, and it shows that you were motivated enough to send a package and paid attention to directions and details. You may include websites showing your work, but please print and include significant items you'd like us to see.

Please address these materials to:
Dan Senatore
Lunar Design Intern Wizard
