LUNAR Announces New Member of Medical Advisory Board
San Francisco, CA (June, 2010) -- LUNAR has named Gabriel Howles, MD, PhD as an Associate Medical Advisory Board member. Dr. Howles joins the five existing board members in further strengthening LUNAR’s medical design expertise and creating additional value for its healthcare and medical-related clients.
Dr. Howles’ working relationship with LUNAR began when he interned for the engineering team in 2009. He was responsible for research and concept development for a new minimally invasive surgical device. He worked with both the engineering and design teams in the development of a variety of other medical and consumer products.
“We are eager to welcome Dr. Howles back to the LUNAR team as an Associate member of our advisory board,” said Robert Howard, VP of Engineering and coordinator of the Medical Advisory Board. “Complementing the creativity he demonstrated during his employment with us, Dr. Howles brings fresh knowledge across multiple clinical fields, enhancing LUNAR’s ability to bring thoughtful solutions to our clients.”
Dr. Howles obtained his bachelors degree in biology from Stanford University, where his research focused on the biochemistry and cell biology of cardiovascular disease. After a brief stint in a successful tech start-up (eventually acquired by Palm, Inc), he worked at Duke University employing computational techniques to study the genetics of the innate immune system. Dr. Howles went on to obtain his MD and PhD at Duke University, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and won the Joseph Eldridge Markee Award. He completed his PhD in the department of biomedical engineering where he developed devices and techniques for high resolution magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, ultrasonic opening of the blood-brain barrier, and vascular imaging with blood-pool contrast agents.
While at Duke, Dr. Howles participated in a technology commercialization program where he helped prepare university inventions for licensure or early-stage investment, including a surgical device for spectroscopic examination of breast cancer margins. He is currently completing a preliminary year of training in internal medicine at the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center. In 2011, he will begin his training in diagnostic radiology at Stanford University.
By establishing a network of trusted medical experts, LUNAR provides clients with powerful resources for cross-disciplinary insights, second opinions, and specialized thinking. Dr. Howles joins the five members of LUNAR’s Medical Advisory Board, which was established in 2003:
Rajiv Doshi, MD, MSE, Executive Director (United States) of the Stanford-India Biodesign Program, Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Ventus Medical, past Principal at De Novo Ventures, and Assistant Consulting Professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine
