LUNAR Creates Iconic Look for the Illumina iScan, Revolutionary Gene-Research Tool
San Francisco, CA (August 29, 2008) -- LUNAR announces its collaboration with Illumina in the development of the iScan system, a breakthrough device in the field of genetic research. A sophisticated scanner, which can analyze and report millions of genotypes per day, the iScan will revolutionize the process of genetic discovery for future use in pharmacogenics and personal genotyping.
Built for use both individually in smaller labs, as well as in larger arrays in roboticized operations, the iScan's design required an individual aesthetic which still appeared cohesive and unified if grouped in pairs or rows. LUNAR created a high-contrast exterior with geometric panels that lock together in a modified yin-yang form, making the iScan a sleek single unit which forms a visually intriguing mondrian pattern when two or more units are placed side by side.
LUNAR also designed the iScan to stand apart from a brand perspective, the first element in what will eventually be a complete family of products. As a three-dimensional icon representing Illumina's technology, the iScan's unique look makes it instantly recognizable in a field of generic, function-centric equipment. Rather than fading into the background of a lab setting, the system's bold design is an expression of the cutting-edge technology it contains: an engaging, sculptural object which can be easily described and which lends itself well to visually-driven marketing.
"The look of the iScan was defined not just by its function in a lab, but its function in contemporary society,” said John Edson, President of LUNAR. "The design of the unit brings two distinct elements together in a seamless embrace, just as Illumina represents the interactions of technology with human DNA."
In addition to establishing a distinct aesthetic identity for the Illumina brand, LUNAR’s design also incorporated improved functional elements. Innovations included a simplified cover design, enabling easy access and fast servicing onsite by field engineers, as well as increased usability for the machine's handling of DNA samples.
