Thought for Food: LUNAR’s DIY Food Container Design Contest at the IDSA International Conference
Calling all students attending the 2010 IDSA International Conference in Portland, OR: you’ve got a chance to win your very own fully loaded 64GB 3G iPad! Show us your creative chops.
To throw some fun facts at an unappetizing reality, 50% of all food is tossed away. This clocks in at 8.3 million tons, or to attach a dollar sign to it, $20 billion dollars worth of waste. All the while over a billion people have next to nothing on their plates. This squandering of perfectly edible resources comes about by way of an unbalanced food served to food eaten ratio, spoiled leftovers, and generally insufficient foresight. And don’t get us started on the amount of food packaging that goes into the landfill each day…
Since this year’s IDSA international conference theme is DIY, we thought we’d get in on the fun. We are posing a challenge to the attending students to cook up a creative solution to address this conundrum with a DIY food container design. Rethink the way we transport food by creating a container made from found objects. The vessel is one part of the equation, but the interaction it evokes is another. Whether it’s food waste prevention or food distribution, in a restaurant or at home, think about how a singular, DIY assembled, modified or crafted creation can change the way we manage the ill effects of the human managed food chain. Entries should walk us through the thought process by detailing out a “how-to” for the creation of the solution.
To participate, students must be present at the IDSA conference and must submit their entry to LUNAR’s display panel in the exhibit hall of the Hilton. Use the LUNAR Sharpie found in the conference goody bag and post your entry to the panel. The most creative entry wins an iPad!
All entries must be posted to the panel by 5pm on Friday, August 6th. The contest will be judged on Saturday, August 7th by LUNAR’s John Edson, FastCompany’s Linda Tischler, and the team at Preserve, makers of high performance, eco-friendly products for the home. The winner will be notified by phone and announced on LUNAR’s blog by Monday, August 16th.
