The Intel Reader is a revolutionary portable device for people with reading-based learning disabilities or visual problems, such as blindness, low vision or dyslexia. The Intel Reader captures the image of a printed page, converts it to digital text, and reads the content aloud. The device levels the playing field for those who struggle with visual or learning impairments and delivers independence from disability constraints.
Intel commissioned LUNAR to create the Reader from scratch, knowing it could be possible to combine digital photography, OCR processing and text-to-speech capabilities in a portable device. LUNAR directed contextual research, persona development, scenario creation, industrial design, optics engineering, hardware design and mechanical engineering to deliver a manufacturing-ready design to Intel.
